Remote Learning

Remote learning begins Monday, April 13th. All of our instruction will be posted on Google Classroom, so please make sure that you are connected to the your core's Google Classroom. An invitation to your Google Classroom was sent to your school email, but if you'd prefer to use the code, you may. :)

  • Core 1: cjfal6u

  • Core 2: ml4ypkp

  • Core 3: lrwyv4d

  • Core 4: w3nx2ez

Once you have access to Google Classroom, please make sure that you review the Orca Need to Knows for Remote Learning. Also, please make sure that you have reviewed the Student Expectations and Guidelines for Remote Learning that Wake County Public School System created, found here.

If you do not have consistent access to a device that is able to access the internet, please be sure to utilize the Instructional Printed Packets that Wake County Public School System created. They are linked here.

If you wish to practice additional skills, you may explore the following supplementary resources: these are a few free websites/resources that will provide you with educational opportunities to enrich the skills we've been practicing. I'll add more as I find new interesting materials to share.

  • EReadingGames: Play a variety of games to test your skills with context clues, poetic devices, grammar, figurative language, and more. Most games are mobile-friendly. No log-in is needed.
  • Scholastic Magazine Articles: 5+ days of high-interest paired articles and thought-provoking questions and scenarios. No log-in is needed.

  • FreeRice.com: A vocabulary quiz game that donates to the World Food Programme for each correct answer. There are English vocabulary and English grammar questions to practice. No log-in is needed, but creating an account to track your own progress is optional.

  • NewsELA: News articles and paired question sets centered around high-interest current events. Log in with your Google account and connect to my class with code KN7U6P.

  • Project Gutenberg: A website offering 60,000+ free e-books for download - try a classic like "The Wizard of Oz" or "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" with no log-in needed.

  • OverDrive: An app for free e-books and audiobooks loaned through local libraries. You will need to create an account and use your Wake County public library card number.

During this time, remember to practice good hygiene and social distancing. Set up new routines to help keep yourself healthy and enrich the learning you have done so far this year. We will get through this, and I look forward to seeing you back at school very soon. Stay safe and healthy!

Announcements

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Crowder via email, ClassDojo,

or TalkingPoints. Mrs. Crowder's email address is: acrowder@wcpss.net

TUTORING is offered during lunch and WEDNESDAYS after school from 3:30 until 4:30. If you would like your child to stay for tutoring, please confirm with me via TalkingPoints, ClassDojo, or email that you (or a family member, friend, or childcare provider) are able to pick up your child no later than 4:30 PM.

Beginning 11/04/2019, any student who receives below a 70% on a Project/Test will be REQUIRED to complete test corrections. Test corrections will be done before or after school upon scheduling OR during lunch times.

If your child has misplaced his/her copy of the workbook, please alert Mrs. Crowder to the situation. While there are not replacement workbooks available, there is an online version of the workbook (linked below). Your child will be responsible for printing any workbook pages necessary for class including texts necessary for assessments and any pages that are submitted for a grade.

DIGITAL WORKBOOK LINKS: Module 1, Module 2, Module 3.

Workbook pages can be downloaded and printed, or they can be completed on notebook paper labeled with the page number AND name of the assignment.

If your student has lost his/her workbook, he/she has likely also lost the papers that were attached to the workbook. They can be found here: Learning Targets (Green Paper), Flush Reading Calendar (Yellow Paper), Flush Vocabulary

The vocabulary should be glued to pages 24-25 in the workbook, the learning targets (green paper) should be stapled to page 26, and the Flush reading calendar (yellow paper) should be stapled to page 27 in the workbook. Pages that are stapled should only be stapled at the top of the paper, so they can still be flipped to see/do work on the back.

If your child is struggling to comprehend a text despite completing his/her reading, please encourage him/her to take notes of what happens in the text while reading. This is best done via post-it notes or directly in the text (only if it is a family-owned copy, NOT borrowed from the school or a teacher). Notes are most effective when something is recorded every two pages - typically a gist statement of what has happened thus far. If recording gists is not helping, please encourage your child to utilize close reading strategies, such as: using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words, making inferences about the text based on prior knowledge, and making predictions about what will happen next in the text. Students may also view summaries of book chapters at https://worldwithoutfishkurlansky.weebly.com/synopsis.html (for "World Without Fish") or http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-flush/#gsc.tab=0 (for "Flush").
